Keeping up with today’s colour trends can put our hair under a lot of stress and make it become and look dry. Once the hair becomes dry it is more prone to colour fading, vibrant colours like reds and burgundy’s which are still very in at the moment can fade very quickly in the sun and are very high maintenance colours to keep on top of. Browns can also fade quickly and blonde tones can turn yellow/orange meaning they need an aftercare product to counteract and keep them to the perfect colour.

There are now after care regimes that can prevent colours from fading at home after having your hair coloured in the salon. Wella’s Colour Fresh is a semi-permanent colour with an acid pH and a perfect combination of direct dyes and caring agents. This versatile product is ideal for gentle colour refreshment suitable for all tones from browns, red and blondes. They can also add tones to highlights, help your coloured hair last longer and prevent it from fading/shifting and give your hair amazing shine being easy to use. The key benefits of this product add depth and tone even on hair that isn’t coloured, fast and easy application, lasts up to 10 shampoos and covers grey/white hairs up to 30%. For blondes, the silver shade 8/81 is fantastic for toning down any unwanted yellow/orange tones.

The most important thing before using any of the Colour Fresh products is to make sure you have a skin test; 24-48 hours before you are going to apply the colour, place a small amount just behind the ear or on the crease of the arm. If it starts to feel hot and itchy then remove it from your skin with some cold water, then do not apply the colour fresh onto your hair. If there is no reaction the colour can safely be applied onto the scalp.

Once you have decided what colour to use for your hair, you can apply it 2 ways. Firstly shampoo your hair and generously apply the colour fresh into your hand (gloves are required), then massage into the hair emulsifying it all in and leave for up to 20 minutes, then rinse out with warm water. Or alternatively section your hair into 4 sections like a hot cross bun and use an applicator bottle applying the colour to each part of the hair and rubbing it in leaving for 20 minutes (this method will probably be better for longer hair), then rinse out with warm water.

Perfecton by Colour Fresh is another way to enhance your colour and keep the mid-lengths and ends (where the colour fades quickest) vibrant and healthy looking. This specialty leave-in colour product contains direct dyes and a vitamin care complex to add vibrant colour and shine. Like the colour fresh, you can use this product at home by mixing it in with some of the leave in conditioner from the system professional range Perfect Hair, a personalised mixture made up to the colour of your hair would be great to use in between salon appointments and put into the hair after it has been washed. Both the perfecton and Colour fresh products do not mix with ammonia and are very gentle on the hair.

Coloured Mousses are temporary and only last in the hair for 1 or 2 washes, the Indola has a shade to suit every colour, they are very good for blending out any white hairs and also give an instant result. After the hair has been shampooed and conditioned squirt some mousse on the palm of the hand about the size of a golf ball, apply evenly through the hair with your hands or alternatively put the mousse on a comb and comb it through the hair for more of an even coverage. If these mousses are used every time the hair is washed the colour will eventually build up on the hair and with their conditioning agents in can make the hair feel smoother and add shine. They can also be used as a quick fix for a night out to freshen up vibrant colours like reds and purples.

Colour save shampoos are very important to have at home to help prevent your colour from fading and give the hair moisture and nourishment. Tinted shampoos can help tone and maintain your colour especially blondes. Violet shampoos can cancel out any unwanted yellow tones on highlighted hair and blonde shampoos can enhance softer, warm shades of high lift blondes and caramel tones; the L’Oreal shine blonde and Vitamino Shampoo and conditioner come highly recommended to freshen up blonde.
